Once you start the OS using the SD card, is it possible to remove it?
That is the equivalent of asking if you can remove the HDD/SSD from a PC after you boot from it.
It is possible to create an operating system that boots from the SD card and then runs entirely from RAM. For example, this is what Tiny Core Linux does.
Tiny Core is different because users are not encouraged to perform a 'traditional', hard-drive installation of the operating system. Sure, a hard drive installation is possible, but Tiny Core is designed to run from a RAM copy created at boot time.

Note that Raspberry Pi OS does not run from RAM. A similar full-fat Linux distribution called Ubuntu is also well supported on the Raspberry Pi. Ubuntu has the further advantage of supporting other single-board computers as well as x86.

Since Ubuntu already functions as a good Debian derivative for the Raspberry Pi, from an ecosystem point of view it might be more important to have an officially supported Red Hat compatible distribution. A Red Hat derivative would provide the long-term stability needed for development of curricular materials in education. It could also allow a Raspberry Pi to provide a test bed for enterprise software that will later be deployed in the cloud.

I wonder if Oracle Linux will ever run on the Pi 5.
