If your workload has short peaks, there are other things to look at. Huge heatsinks to absorb the heat peaks and dissipate the heat. A fan on the heatsink could be powered from somewhere else.
If the source has more than one USB 3 port, you could rig a Y cable to get power from two ports. DVD players ran that way from two USB 2 ports. Image may be NSFW.
