PI Zero can struggle with memory during upgrades - especially on the desktop version.
Increasing the virtual memory (swapfile) size may help.
Edit /etc/dphys-swapfile and change the CONF_SWAPSIZE=100 line to CONF_SWAPSIZE=2048 then reboot and see if that helps.
I'm wondering if the default should be set higher for the lower spec systems.
