Thanks ! Pi 5 is now on back-order. Setup an old 4B 8Gb with the new bookworm in the meantime, to get a feel for it.

Ended up needing to share the monitor via the ports in it, the PC is DisplayPort 1.4 and of course the Pi5 is HDMI.

1. Even with the 4B, flashed a USB key as a boot drive, plug it in, and boot from it straight away

2. Chromium runs OK on the 4B as does Firefox, both play videos acceptably if the playing window is sized small enough. Had to reduce the Pi's desktop display resolution to 1920x1080 as well. Chromium does better (feels "faster", "smoother video") than firefox. Hopefully the Pi5 should be fine.

3. Firefox ... see 2.

4. No I cannot usefully rdp into it from a PC nor use VNC since VNC is "broken" in terms of incompatibility with wayland. Gave up on that ... a real pity. The new PiConnect looks good ... but it requires an internet connection which I am unwilling to live with at this stage.

5. Security approach, ran into "known" issues with fail2ban so removed it as recommended. Installed ufw.
The 4 is itself a decent machine. Until the 5 came out; we used 400s as our daily desktop machines. My partner still does. Perfectly useable. For most day to day tasks; with a few exceptions; the 5 doesn't actually "seem" much faster.

Have fun. :D
