The "myth" I worry about is that people will think they can simply connect Pico FT GPIO direct to 5V systems and not worry about it, expect it to just be fine.

I agree that is a myth, for some definitions of "tolerant". The datasheet wording is perfectly clear about what "tolerant" means in this case.

However, I would rather say,

• it would be best to keep the "5V tolerant" myth from spreading if it is one. or
• it would be best to stop the "5V tolerant" myth spreading if it is one.

Or, of course, simply refer people to (the correct version of) the datasheet.
