When I want to interface my electronic projects with an iPhone/iPad, I use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). In theory this could be done with a Pico W. I have only done it with Nordic nRF51/52 parts though since those projects predate the RP2040. Even today I would lean more towards the Nordic parts for my own projects of that type due to its lower power capabilities as the projects tended to be battery powered. I prefer the RP2 family for most other projects though and everything I am working on right now uses a RP2040 µC.
