I'll keep the general rule in mind. Your feedback has helped.Thank you.My schematic showed where the 5V supply (+5V and GND) is connected as well as the connections to the Pi (GPIO and GND). It is clearly marked.I meant a schematic with the separate 5V supply. I was hoping to observe how/where you connect the negative of the separate PSU. Is it going to be similar to what I have in the schematic? Also, If you read the below response, ame has mentioned that I don't understand ground. Which made me think i'm doing something wrong by connecting the negative of the PSU to ground pin of PI. Can you explain where I'm going wrong.
You don't seem to have an understanding of what Ground is used for in a circuit. It is (usually) used as a common reference level for all parts of the circuit. Without some sort of reference level there can be no circuit.
The general rule is All Grounds must be connected together.
