Troubleshooting • constant freezing with the raspberry pi 5 under any kind of a load/install

I purchased a Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB edition) months ago and have been playing around with it. It is my first one and my knowledge of Linux is limited.

My issues seemed to start when I began trying any kind of a long install or load on the system. I was experiencing freezing and locking up and would have to power cycle it. I was not using a case at this time and just had the stock heatsink on it. I then purchased the CanaKit Turbine Case for Raspberry PI 5. That actually seemed to make things worse. Freezing increased. I briefly used it before removing the case all together again. I grabbed a small house fan I have and pointed it directly at the Pi just a few inches away. Freezing and locking up stopped.

I then went looking for a larger heatsink. I purchased one on Amazon. GeeekPi ICE Tower Cooler for Raspberry Pi 5, with Aluminum Heatsink with Cooling Fan for Raspberry Pi 5 4GB/8GB. That seemed to make things more stable, although I didn't use it much during this period. A heatsink of this size caused install issues when I purchased the M.2 HAT+ with 1TB NVMe SSD, so I removed the heatsink, purchased the Raspberry Pi 5 Active Cooler, installed that, installed the HAT with the 1TB, installed the raspberry pi OS, and began my testing with that setup.

(prior to that I was using microsd cards and it froze with the raspberry pi OS microsd card and also the bacotera retro game emulator (especially with this one and it always froze while scraping for game covers as well, unless a house fan was on the pi keeping it cooler)

So with the new setup:
Raspberry Pi 5 8gb with active cooler, M.2 HAT+ with 1TB NVMe SSD with the PI OS running on it. the temp at idle is around 45-50c. When running stress tests, it rises up to a high of 63 or 64c at which point, my Pi will throw errors, and freeze up, causing me to power cycle it. This happens a lot running a 2m stress test. It happens almost every time though with a 5m stress test. Stress test i'm trying is below:

"stress-ng --cpu 4 --iomix 2 --vm 2 --vm-bytes 256m --timeout 5m --metrics-brief"

From everything I read, the Pi should run stable until at least 80c. I do not see any under voltage errors, I don't see any throttling of the cpu either.

the ONLY way I can get the Pi to remain stable is to have that house fan directed at it. When that is the case, I can even bump the stress test to 10 minutes and it'll be fine everytime and throw no errors. The temps range from 30-50c when the house fans on it and i'm running stress tests.

Anyone know what's going on here? Issues with the temp probe? Some other hardware issue causing sensitivity to the heat? Given that i've tried multiple storage sources, and multiple heatsinks, cooling fans, i'm left to think it's a hardware problem.

Appreciate any input.
