I’ll be perfectly honest and admit that some of these terms are beyond my pay-grade. You seem knowledgeable, what approach would you go for to precisely locate 12 different ID’s on a board like this?

I can honestly say I don't know, I've been thinking about doing this for over forty years and the earlier options had much more mechanical aspect to them, then the hardware electronic phase and now its computer my first instinct is to do something optical with either visible or invisible coding on the bottom of the pieces or alternatively a camera above. Its always a balance between cost, effort and reliability and reliability could be a hard one to nail in this case especially if you are dealing with small electronic signals.

Its always low priority on my list because I prefer to do practical projects more than projects for hobbies and even then it would be ambitious to call my chess hobby-level, its more like occasional interest, Gotham Chess relights the spark now and then but I'm getting slower and he is getting faster.

Thanks @ghp, I'll have a read of those later.
