Define private network...

Any machine on the network with ANY type of Internet access (inc mail)?
Any machine where you load software on from USB stick / DVD or CD - Disk (heck even floppy)?
Any machine receiving updates that you have downloaded for somewhere (inc Apple / Microsoft etc)?
A network that you let your friends access?

Any of these are classic vectors for a bad actor to start access attempts.

Like any computer - the Pi can be a security risk and just because its small / running Linux is not an excuse for:

Browsing iffy sites
Loading hacked / pirated software
Not using malware check / blockers or good practise

AV and Linux is a mixed bag - Clam is the often used package but it has locked machine up with 100% cpu before today.
My normal Network at home...
