I beat you. I started with punch cards then moved to terminal based mini computers. That was years before PC's ;-)

Any, as to your issues
So i write the Ubuntu Server image onto the USB stick, but when I boot it on the Pi the Desktop comes up and there are two 'drives' in the File Menu, one is Writeable and the other is System Boot and I'm stuck what to do next. The instructions on the web usually say, it will boot up and then you config it, and so on. Well, it doesn't do anything. Is there a command I can run in terminal?
You may want to post these your issues on an Ubuntu forum. See Ubuntu forum. The reason being is that you are having problems getting your software to load and run on Ubuntu but there are no issues with your RPI 4 hardware. If you were running a PI OS, someone might be able to help. They still may but I don't know Ubuntu.

To put it a different way, you are asking DOS question on a CP-M forum ;-)

Good luck.
