General discussion • Re: Bookworm running much hotter on Pi Zero 2W

Hey all,

I've been building on Pi Zero 2Ws for months now and they've been great for our use case, which is under high heat stress. Recently while flashing a new device, I realized the default flash changed from Bullseye to Bookworm for the Zero 2W. I thought "No problem, I'll try it out." Within a few minutes of idling, the device reached 55 C, enough to make it almost too hot to handle. I was concerned there was some deficiency or HW malfunction, but I erased the OS and refreshed Bullseye to check, and it's back down to 40-45 C at idle.

Given that we're specifically working with the Pi 0 to avoid excessive compute and heat, this is a problem. I find it hard to believe that an OS adds that many new features to overload the system though. So my questions

1. Is this a known phenomenon that people have seen before?
2. Are the specific features or configurations that make Bookworm much more intensive than Bullseye? Or is it specific to the interaction with the 2W HW?
3. Are there things I can do to keep the OS overhead to a minimum?
4. How long will Bullseye be supported? I'm leaning towards just sticking with that for the foreseeable future, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot down the road with a massive forced migration.

Thanks!
There have been a number of reports Bookworm does not update on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 unless swap is increased. I have not heard anyone say the idle temperature is 10C greater.

Are you comparing a 64-bit OS to a 32-bit one?

A new release of Debian happens about once every two years and Bookworm came our a year ago. Raspberry Pi OS has historically followed Debian with a few months delay. If the same schedule continues, the Bullseye reheat of. Raspberry Pi OS would be deprecated a few months before Christmas 2025.
