Using separate power supplies and a USB A - USB C cable between Rpi and Viewsonic, everything works fine.
Using a USB C dongle at the RPi USB C port, with a USB A - USB C cable between Dongle and Viewsonic, everything works fine, including the powering of the screen via the USB cable.
When I try to put the power in one port of the Viewsonic, and then chain the RPi from the other port of the Viewsonic using the various USB C - USB C cables (Android, Apple, Belkin TB3) I have lying around... it doesn't work.
I am resigned to think the only solution is now to just buy a USB C power supply with two ports, power the devices discreetly and use a USB A - USB C cable between them. Boring.
