I want to share some positive developments regarding the freezing issues I've been experiencing. After some investigation, I've discovered that this time the problem wasn't with my hardware, but rather with my choice of desktop environment. Specifically, lately I've been using GNOME (which I installed on both Raspbian Lite and the full version of Raspbian via tasksel.)
Given this insight, I've decided to focus my attention on the default Raspbian OS environment, which I also find quite appealing. This means, for the time being, I will be conducting my tests exclusively on the vanilla Raspbian setup.
I'm pleased to report an immediate improvement: my NVMe drive and enclosure combination is now operating flawlessly, without any of the previous freezing issues.
The specific hardware I'm using is the ICY BOX IB-1817M-C31 for the NVMe enclosure and a SAMSUNG MZAL4256HBJD NVMe 256GB SSD.
(Not all freezes are equal
Some of them are in my case indeed related to incompatible SSD & adapter hardware combinations or NVMe drives that are to power hungry. I will continue to update the info after further testing.)
